This is one of the oldest songs in the collection. It deals with one of the deepest fears that we cannot escape from - as we get older our bodies get weaker and start to fail us.
Ca’ Hawkie
A song ostensibly about a cow that refuses to cross a stream and about maidens who are told to take off their clothes and drive the cow through the water until they all get to the other side where the men are presumably waiting for them. A fertility song if ever I heard one.
Winter Song
Anyone who has experienced a cold north east winter will empathise with this song. But get out into Northumberland and you’ll appreciate its raw beauty and remember, spring is just around the corner.
