Jock o’ the Side

If you’re an Armstrong, Charlton, Robson, Elliot, Nixon, Carr, Ridley, Forster, Crozier, Fenwick or Clennell, the chances are that you’re descended from the Border Reivers. Brutalised by years of border warfare they fought ruthlessly amongst one another. They did, however, have another side to them, producing wonderful ballads which told tales of their heroes.

The Rain it Rains

A Will Shakespeare song performed by Feste at the end of Twelfth Night. Not strictly a North East song, but too good to miss out and it must have been performed here a few times over the years!

But when I came, alas, to wive,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
By swaggering could I never thrive,
For the rain it raineth every day.

― William Shakespeare (from Twelfth Night)
